Webinar Recap: Navigating Regulatory Changes in IoT: What You Need to Know

As IoT devices continue to become more essential and pervasive in sheer numbers, the necessary securing of this broad technical segment is getting welcomed regulatory attention. Recognizing this critical need, Somos collaborated with Transforma Insights to develop a whitepaper that explores these regulatory changes and outlines strategies for securing IoT devices across diverse environments.

Somos held a recent webinar, "Navigating Regulatory Changes in IoT: What You Need to Know," moderated by Michael Smyth, Senior Product Manager at Somos, and featuring Sri Ramachandran, SVP and CTO at Somos, Allen Boone, CEO of Simetric and Jim Morrish, Founding Partner at Transforma Insights. In this webinar, they discussed key insights into the fast-changing IoT regulatory landscape.

Michael Smyth kicked off the session by highlighting how IoT’s massive integration into daily life has amplified vulnerabilities, calling for robust regulations. Jim Morrish then highlighted the whitepaper, discussing landmark policies like the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which enforces lifecycle cybersecurity for IoT devices and NIST2, targeting critical industries with strict practices. He added that in the U.S., initiatives, like California’s IoT Security Law and FDA directives add layers of accountability for manufacturers.

Allen Boone and Sri Ramachandran joined Jim and explored enterprise challenges in securing IoT infrastructure. They stressed the critical need for visibility and how tools like SomosID simplify device tracking, enabling enterprises to manage vulnerabilities and updates effectively.

The panelists emphasized that IoT security isn’t a “set it and forget it” task — it demands constant monitoring and adaptability. Michael Smyth closed with a powerful reminder: “You can’t secure what you can’t see.” He urged organizations to act now, leveraging the insights shared to strengthen IoT security and compliance.
