From Summit to Service: Cultivating a Culture of Compassion
At the 2023 Somos Summit, in the bustling heart of the Nation's Capital, telecom’s brightest thought leaders convened to spark conversation and innovation. But it wasn’t just new ideas that filled the halls; there was also a visible collective commitment to champion giving back.
At Somos, giving back is not just a part of our corporate responsibility – it is woven into the very fabric of our organizational culture. At events like our Summit, we embrace the vibrant communities that open their doors to hosting us and express our gratitude through purposeful support and contributions that make a meaningful impact.
Attendees of the Summit worked together and embraced the power of philanthropy through a partnership with Miriam's Kitchen. A non-profit organization based locally in Washington, D.C., Miriam’s Kitchen works tirelessly to help end chronic homelessness. Their approach is rooted in the belief that it:
Starts with dignity, progresses through belonging, continues with change, and, ultimately, finds fulfillment in housing.
During this year’s Making a Difference activity, the collective goal was simple yet poignant: to build kits for the homeless and create blankets for those relying on support and services from Miriam's Kitchen. Amidst the innovative solutions explored at the Summit, this down-to-earth initiative was an important reminder that innovation extends beyond algorithms and market strategy – it’s transforming lives and cultivating change through collaboration.
The 2023 Somos Summit was not just about words; it was about tangible deeds. As one attendee posited, “It acknowledged a problem that’s endemic to the nation, and yet hyperlocal. For an audience immersed in systems issues and design thinking to solve big challenges, it was a grounded reminder that societal change starts with one person at a time.”
This year, the power of collective action was woven throughout all aspects of the 2023 Somos Summit. Not only did the event showcase a culture rooted in compassion but also the tenet that making the world a better place is a responsibility we all share. More so, we were reminded that the sum of our actions transforms our communities. As Rachel Glassman, Chief Development Officer at Miriam’s Kitchen so aptly put it:
We were excited to partner with Somos for their summit not only to create blankets and care packs for our neighbors in need but to also share information about how we can work together to make it so everyone in D.C. has a safe place to call home.
