Session Recap: Set Sail for 833 Auction Registration and Application Success at TFUS19

In September 2018, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took action to modernize the assignment of Toll-Free Numbers (TFNs) by announcing the use of an auction to distribute highly sought after TFNs in the 833 area code. To ensure that numbers go to those that value them most, a comprehensive registration and application process has been developed for the 833 Toll-Free Number Auction.

In the first Power Session of the 2019 Toll-Free User Summit (TFUS19), Sold! How to Navigate the 833 Auction, Joel Bernstein, Somos’ VP of Regulatory & Public Policy and Ryan Karnas, Somos’ Director, Product Management, walked attendees through the registration and application process so that prospective participants could confidently – and successfully! – participate in the 833 Toll-Free Number Auction, being conducted this December 2019.

To begin, the team made it abundantly clear that attending this session was NOT a substitute for reviewing all of the orders, public notices, rules and policies regarding the 833 Auction. Organizations and individuals interested in participating in the auction need to make sure to do their due diligence to appropriately educate and prepare themselves for the auction.

After reviewing the auction’s rules, the Power Session shifted gears into a deep dive on how to complete the registration process. As the registration form is exceedingly comprehensive, the speakers emphasized that prospective participants should take their time when filling it out and also be thoughtful and thorough with their responses.

When it comes to completing the application process, the audience was once more given a detailed view of the steps needed to successfully participate in the 833 Auction. While meticulous, the application process was structured to ensure that interested parties were properly vetted and qualified.
