[Now On-Demand from CES 2022] IoT in Auto: IoT is Fundamental to EVs

Today, Internet of Things (IoT) devices are one of the most common tools for not only sharing data and information but also for making life easier and more automated. From Amazon Echos to Ring Doorbells to Google Assistants and beyond, usually, when we consider IoT technology, we immediately think of smaller, in-home devices.

What one often forgets; however, is that electric and autonomous vehicles are ALSO IoT devices and as such, need to be properly provisioned, managed and governed.

In the 2022 CES panel discussion, IoT in Auto: IoT is Fundamental to EVs (Electric Vehicles), Sri Ramachandran, SVP and CTO at Somos, was joined by Andy Castonguay, VP, Strategic Intelligence at James Brehm Associates, and Ludovico Fassati, Head of IoT, Americas at Vodafone Business, for a candid discussion around the importance of data in the automotive sphere and its continued evolution. Specifically, they discussed how automotive features and functionality personalization have transitioned from being more hardware (AKA manufacturing) driven to being more focused on software customization capability.

When it comes to an increased reliance on technology; however, also comes a higher need for increased trust in the ecosystem. As a result, as the panel found, it is imperative that EVs have proper identity management protocols in place. From registration and lifecycle management to jurisdiction and ownership transfer, EVs – and more importantly, the data they consume and exchange – needs to be trusted and secured.
