Project Estimation Strategies
A web-based course that applies key TOC ideas to the challenge of estimating project uncertainty. It explores best practices for scheduling innovative "first-time" projects, and shows how to improve overall predictability and control. Estimated duration: 3-4 hours.
Project Estimation Strategies applies key TOC ideas to the challenge of estimating project uncertainty. It explores best practices for scheduling innovative, "first-time" projects, and shows you how to improve overall predictability and control.
When we work on projects that deal with new processes or new technologies, we often find ourselves moving through territory where no one has gone before. Still, our customers, our partners, and our managers want us to provide reliable delivery dates that we can commit to. This is the basic challenge that project teams in innovative companies must deal with today.
Originally developed for Sun Microsystems, Project Estimation Strategies addresses the special issues faced by those who manage projects that require specialized resources and involve a high degree of novelty. Project Estimation Strategies uses voicestream and onscreen animation to introduce you to new strategies for estimating and scheduling your projects-strategies that work! This course presents key ideas and best practices from the Theory of Constraints (TOC) and shows you how to apply them to the challenges of scheduling "first-time" projects.
3-4 hours | 3 PDUs
- How to Tackle the Estimation of Uncertainty
- Best Practices for Scheduling Innovative, "First-time" Projects
- How to Improve Overall Timing, Predictability and Control
- Assess the critical impact of Resource Constraints
- Identify your project's Critical Chain of activities
- Add safety by using Project Padding instead of task padding
- Understand how to deploy Project Buffers, Feeding Buffers, and Resource Buffers
- Size your buffers appropriately based on risk levels in the Four Basic Task Types
- Use Structured Optimization techniques to shorten the project's Critical Chain
- Monitor Buffer Consumption to keep your projects on track
- And much, much more!
Project Estimation Strategies has been designed for project managers, program managers and team leaders who are responsible for developing schedules and managing projects. The class assumes basic familiarity with traditional project management terms and concepts (Gantt charts, dependencies, resource leveling, slack, etc.). Project Estimation Strategies briefly reviews key ideas from the Critical Path Method (CPM), and then quickly takes you beyond them. For those who are not familiar with the terms and concepts of project scheduling, we recommend that you take our companion online class, Project Scheduling Fundamentals, or an equivalent course, to get the greatest value from Project Estimation Strategies.
Individual user registrations for Project Estimation Strategies are $225 for a 90-day license key. Substantial discounts are available for volume purchases and site licenses. To register, or for more information, click here or call us at 613-592-5050 or 1-877-SOMOS-PM.

Managing Project Risk
A web-based introduction to best practices in the field of risk management that provides a structured process to help systematically identify risk, and determine which risks are worth pursuing. It presents both pro-active and reactive strategies for managing identified risks. Estimated duration: 3-4 hours.
After many years as an exotic specialty, risk management has become an essential part of mainstream project management practice. Managing Project Risk offers a solid introduction to best practices from the field of risk management. It provides a structured process that can help you systematically identify risk for any project, and it teaches you how to determine which risks are worth pursuing. It presents both pro-active and reactive strategies for managing identified risks. Case Studies are used to show theory in action and to give participants a chance to apply key ideas.
During this course, you will write a Statement of Scope before diving in headfirst, recognize the common pitfalls that sabotage many projects and identify project risk in a systematic, structured way. You will map risk to the phases of the project development cycle and use a risk assessment matrix to gather team input. You will evaluate risk severity and risk impact quantitatively and intervene to eliminate or mitigate risk before the project begins. You will develop contingency plans to contain remaining risks, assess your overall level of preparedness and monitor ongoing risk as the project proceeds.
After completing the Managing Project Risk course, participants will be familiar with basic risk management theory, concepts, and principles, as well as with techniques for identifying, analyzing, and managing risk.

Managing Complexity in Technology Projects
A two-day advanced course for Information Technology and Product Development project managers that routinely deal with multiple stakeholder environments, competing priorities, and constantly shifting requirements, technologies, and competition.
The SOMOS course Managing Complexity in Technology Projects is an advanced course for project managers whose projects require more than a Gantt chart and weekly team meeting to manage.
Project managers leading Information Technology and Product Development projects are expected to overcome extreme technical challenges in an environment of multiple stakeholders, competing priorities, and constantly shifting requirements, technologies, and competition. Of course, the basic demands for "First Class Results, On-Time, On Budget" still hold.
The SOMOS course Managing Complexity in Technology Projects gives attendees the tools to deal with those challenges.
This course begins by looking at the environment that is encountered in Product Development and Information Technology projects. We examine the nature of complexity, arising from issues of technology, organization, personality, legislation, competition, and dynamics. Some of the common models for describing and managing complexity are surveyed and compared. We then present several powerful tools that project managers can use to manage the complexity that they encounter.
This course is built on proven principles from Systems Engineering and Project Leadership, as well as the latest thinking in Agile Software Development and Management Science.
This course uses a combination of lecture presentation, case study, discussion, and group work. It is intended for experienced project managers. Attendees will take away a set of practical tools to analyze the nature of their project's complexity, to reduce that complexity, and to successfully deal with the different elements of complexity.

Managing Project Quality
A two-day in-depth course that examines the management of quality in projects using best practices brought together from a variety of industries.
Quality is defined as meeting the customer's requirements. Project quality management is the process of managing the project activities and resources so that the customer's requirements and expectations are managed and met throughout the project execution as well as by the final product.
The SOMOS Managing Project Quality course was developed by examining the best project management practices of companies in a variety of industries. These best practices were analyzed and brought together to present a course that is applicable in both certified (ISO 9000) and non-certified environments. This course begins with an overview of quality management tools, techniques, and programs and moves quickly into the application of these concepts in the project environment. The unique characteristics and special challenges of projects are examined.
Through a combination of lectures, exercises, and case studies, this course provides an in-depth examination of the management of quality in projects.
After completing the Managing Project Quality course, participants will be familiar with basic quality management theory, concepts, and principles. They will be able to apply quality management techniques in a project environment. The course also prepares participants to write the Project Quality Management component of the Project Management Professional (PMP®) examination of the Project Management Institute (PMI®).
