Staying Organized with Resp Org IDs

Keeping 40+ million Toll-Free Numbers straight takes a lot of organization, and that is the power of the SMS/800 Toll-Free Number (TFN) Registry. It is the authoritative registry that maintains both the Responsible Organization (Resp Org) information and Toll-Free Number routing data.  And one of the ways we maintain order is by providing each Resp Org with two unique IDs.

One of these IDs, the xxx99 Resp Org ID, allows Resp Orgs to identify Toll-Free Numbers that warrant special consideration before a Toll-Free Number moves from one Resp Org’s management to another’s. The xxx99 Resp Org ID helps prevent service interruptions or outages for Toll-Free Numbers that businesses or organizations are using. It can be assigned to any Toll-Free Number used for any of the following purposes:

  • Government Agencies
  • Hospitals or Medical Organizations
  • Shared or Bundled Services
  • Government Directives/Court Orders
  • Internal Resp Org Customer Service Numbers

When a Toll-Free Number is stored within the xxx99 Resp Org ID, any Resp Org Change completed will trigger an email and phone call alert to the controlling Resp Org. These IDs help us maintain an ordered database of Toll-Free Numbers and enable better and more trustworthy connections between customers and businesses.

For more information, please see the Industry Guidelines for Toll Free Number Administration. The Industry Guidelines for Toll Free Number Administration is a document developed by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), which provides important and useful information to Resp Orgs for managing Toll-Free Number portability processes on a fair, equitable, and orderly basis.
